Brayden King (B.A. BYU, 1998; Ph.D. Arizona, 2005) - I am an assistant
professor of sociology at Brigham Young University. My research
focuses on the dynamics of organizational and institutional change. One
strand of research explores the ways in which social movements and
other extra-institutional actors create change in the political and
corporate settings. My papers examine the mechanisms whereby
outsiders generate influence in these highly institutionalized
settings. By drawing attention to ignored social problems and
helping set the political and corporate agenda, movements create
pathways for the discussion of future change. Another strand of
research deals with the interorganizational determinants of
organizational change. My dissertation explored various forms of
social influence underlying acquisition activity among firms in the
communications industries. I demonstrate that the
interorganizational context of the market shaped public perceptions of
value of acquisition choices and had subsequent effects on market
valuation.
I teach undergraduate and graduate classes on
organizational theory, economic sociology, political sociology, and
corporate reputation.
